By: Diaz, L.F.; Bertoldi, M. de; Bidlingmaier, W.
Published by: Elsevier Science
Composting is a widely used biological process for the management of some wastes produced in communities and agricultural activities, which have experienced substantial growth during the last few years. Because this and the knowledge of composting has increased, the number of composting facilities has increased tremendously, especially in some European countries. Interest has also increased in several countries in other regions of the world. This book attempts to summarize some of the most important work conducted during the last few years under one cover. Fateful Harvest
By: Wilson, Duff
Published by: Harper Collins
I see soil in a new light, and I wonder about my own lawn and garden. What have I sprinkled on my backyard? Is somebody using my home, my food, to recycle toxic waste? It seems unbelievable, outlandish -- but what if it's true?. A riveting exposé, Fateful Harvest tells the story of Patty Martin -- the mayor of a small Washington town called Quincy -- who discovers American industries are dumping toxic waste into farmers' fields and home gardens by labeling it "fertilizer." She becomes outraged at the failed crops, sick horses, and rare diseases in her town, as well as the threats to her children's health. Yet, when she blows the whistle on a nationwide problem, Patty Martin is nearly run out of town. Duff Wilson, whose Seattle Times series on this story was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, provides the definitive account of a new and alarming environmental scandal. Fateful Harvest is a gripping study of corruption and courage, of recklessness and reckoning. It is a story that speaks to the greatest fears -- and ultimate hope -- in us all.

Permissible Dose
By: Walker, J. Samuel
Published by: University of California Press
How much radiation is too much? J. Samuel Walker examines the evolution, over more than a hundred years, of radiation protection standards and efforts to ensure radiation safety for nuclear workers and for the general public. The risks of radiation--caused by fallout from nuclear bomb testing, exposure from medical or manufacturing procedures, effluents from nuclear power, or radioactivity from other sources--have aroused more sustained controversy and public fear than any other comparable industrial or environmental hazard.

11th International Congress on Catalysis
By: Hightower, J.W.; Delgass, W.N.; Iglesia, E.
Published by: Elsevier Science
These proceedings contain 145 papers - 7 plenary lectures and 138 submitted papers selected for oral presentation. The plenary lectures include five overviews of vital research areas by highly respected researchers and two overviews of advances in the science and technology of catalysis made during the last 40 years. The first group explores the forces that drive innovation in catalysis, constrained geometry in metallocene olefin polymerization, characterization and design of oxide surfaces, photocatalysis, and factors required in the molecular design of catalysts. Two others are presented by researchers who attended the first ICC meeting 40 years ago and who have been substantive contributors to science and engineering developments that have occurred since then. The proceedings differ from those published previously in two important ways. Firstly, the papers were published prior to the meeting for distribution to all delegates who attended the meeting in Baltimore. Secondly, none of the discussions at the meeting are included, which has the advantage of smaller size (only 2 volumes, less than 1,600 pages) which should make the books more attractive to libraries and other repositories of research literature. A CD-ROM, comprising all the material covered in the 2 volumes, is also included.
