Agent-Based Models of Energy Investment Decisions
By: Wittmann, Tobias
Published by: Physica-Verlag GmbH & Co
As societies face the challenge of securing an efficient and environmentally sound energy supply, researchers have strived to determine the future development of energy consumption, infrastructure and technology endowment. This book proposes a new agent-based approach to studying the development of urban energy systems. Decisions of private and commercial investors and operators are modeled using a bounded rational decision model which are parameterized by socio-economic data. The study goes on to analyze the impact of firms??? competition on technology diffusion and calculate diffusion curves for energy technologies such as solar collectors, boilers and efficiency upgrades for buildings. While making an important methodological contribution to the field of energy modelling, the author also presents practical results which will help urban planners and policy makers take more accurate decisions. Architecture of the Visible
By: MacPhee, Graham
Published by: Continuum
Visual technology now saturates everyday life. Theories of the visual - now key to debates across cultural studies, social theory, art history, literary studies and philosophy - have interpreted this condition as the beginning of a dystopian future, of cultural decline, social disempowerment and political passivity. This book presents a wide-ranging critical reassessment of contemporary visual culture through an analysis of pivotal technological innovation from the telescope, through photography to film. A range of theorists - from Baudelaire to Merleau-Ponty, Debord, Benjamin, Virilio, Jameson, Baudrillard and Derrida - have explored how technology not only reinvents the visual but also changes the nature of culture itself. The heartland of all such cultural analysis has been the city, from Baudelaire's flaneur to Benjamin's Arcades. Drawing on the examples of Paris and New York - two key world cities since the 19th century - the book analyses how visual technology is revolutionising the landscape of modern thought, politics and culture.

By: Landry, Charles
Published by: Earthscan
'This truly inspirational tour de force takes readers on a tremendous global journey of discovery to put the art back into city-making. All those involved in the future of cities should read this monumental work...your imagination will be freed. Practical guidance combined with visionary insights and challenges weave through every chapter' Clive Harridge President Royal Town Planning Institute UK 'Charles Landry has been a long term contributor to "the art of city-making". Dr Masayuki Sasaki Dean Professor of Graduate School for Creative Cities Osaka City University Japan 'City-making is a difficult art and Charles Landry has captured its essence. His world view is valuable to people everywhere who care about cities. All of his books sit highlighted and dog-eared near my desk and this one will be no exception.' Carol Coletta President CEOs for Cities USA and host and producer of the Smart City radio programme City-making is an art not a formula. The skills required to re-enchant the city are far wider than the conventional ones like architecture engineering and land-use planning. There is no simplistic ten-point plan but strong principles can help send good city-making on its way. The vision for 21st century cities must be to be the most imaginative cities for the world rather than in the world. This one change of word from 'in' to 'for' gives city-making an ethical foundation and value base. It helps cities become places of solidarity where the relations between the individual the group outsiders to the city and the planet

Asian Ethical Urbanism
By: Lim , William S W
Published by: World Scientific
With the impending demise of modernist planning, the footprints and corpses of failed modernist visions are littered everywhere. A vacuum of implementable urban theories has occurred at the time when unprecedented expansion and restructuring of cities in rapidly developing economies are taking place. In this collection of essays, William S W Lim zeroes in on the peculiarities and dynamics of present Asian urban and architectural conditions in order to challenge and transcend the socio-ecological forms and political influences generated by the current system of global capitalism. Part I of this book consists of the main essay, which attempts to establish baselines for an effective formulation of ethical urbanism in Asia, by clarifying issues that have previously been unquestioningly bound up with Western values and discourses. As an architect/urbanist, Lim lends a determinedly spatialist and environmental perspective to issues such as rights, ethics, happiness and social justice, while compelling his readers to rethink previously established notions about them. Part II of this book consists of three city studies on Hanoi, Shanghai and Singapore, completed in the last two years, which attempt to match Lims theoretical formulation with actual conditions occurring in Asia today. Also included is Asian Architecture in the New Millennium, a fascinating discourse on contemporary design conducted from a postmodern perspective.
